Why this roadmap exists

If you've tried to learn Microsoft's agentic AI stack recently, you've probably noticed the same thing I did: there's a lot of content, and almost no clear order to walk through it. Copilot, Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, AI Builder, Power Platform — each one has its own modules, its own certifications, its own audience. A business user and a senior cloud engineer were getting handed the same starting page.

This roadmap is my attempt to fix that. Fourteen learning paths and credentials, grouped into four levels that map to the four roles people usually arrive in: curious newcomer, builder, engineer, or leader. The point isn't for anyone to complete all fourteen. The point is to find the two or three that fit where you actually want to go.

Here's the full breakdown, level by level.

01
Foundation

Core AI & Copilot literacy

Where everyone starts. By the end of this level, you'll know what Copilot is, what an agent is, and how the pieces of Microsoft's AI ecosystem fit together.

01 Learning Path

Get Started with Microsoft 365 Copilot

1h 31m · 3 modules

A short, friction-free intro to Copilot inside the apps people already use every day. If you're new to AI assistants, this is the easiest place to begin.

M365 · O365 · Copilot · M365 Apps
02 AB-730

AI Business Professional

4h 30m · 6 modules

For business professionals who want outcomes, not theory. This credential shows you can use Copilot to move real work forward — drafting, analyzing, summarizing, deciding.

M365 Copilot
03 AI-901

Azure AI Fundamentals

8h 16m · 12 modules

The Azure AI baseline, refreshed for the Foundry era. If you're going to touch any technical side of the stack — admin, maker, or developer — this is the cert most people will expect you to have.

Azure · Microsoft Foundry
04 AB-900

Copilot & Agent Admin Fundamentals

6h 45m · 6 modules

Built for admins, IT leads, and compliance owners who need to keep AI safe and governed in production. If Copilot is rolling out at your company, someone needs this — probably you.

M365 · Foundry Tools
02
Builder

Build & deploy agents

Where literacy turns into craft. This is the maker track — and it's where a lot of the practical value of agentic AI is going to be created over the next few years.

05 Recruit

Copilot Studio Academy: Recruit

8h 50m · 14 modules

The first tier of the Copilot Studio Academy. Recruit walks you through the platform, the building blocks, and the mental model. By the end, you've built your first real agent.

Copilot Studio
06 Applied Skills

Create Agents in Copilot Studio

4h 05m · 5 modules

An Applied Skills credential — hands-on and assessed against real tasks instead of multiple-choice questions. Take this when you're ready to prove you can actually ship something.

Copilot Studio
07 Operative

Copilot Studio Academy: Operative

8h 10m · 12 modules

The second Academy tier. This is where you go from "I built an agent" to "I designed an agent that holds up under real-world constraints" — topics, knowledge, actions, orchestration.

Copilot Studio
08 Applied Skills

Enhance Agents with Autonomous Capabilities

2h 00m · 3 modules

Short, focused, and very current. Autonomous agents — the kind that act on their own triggers and complete multi-step work — are the frontier. This sprint gets you there fast.

Copilot Studio
09 AB-620

AI Agent Builder Associate

8h 29m · 11 modules

The capstone of the Builder track. An Associate-level cert that says clearly: this person builds production-grade AI agents. If you only earn one credential from this whole framework, this is the one I'd argue carries the most weight right now.

Copilot Studio
03
Advanced

Engineer intelligent applications

For engineers and architects. At this level, AI stops being a feature and starts being a system — with all the design discipline that implies.

10 AB-410 · Coming Soon

Build Intelligent Applications

To be announced

An upcoming Associate-level credential focused on building intelligent applications end-to-end on Copilot Studio. It closes an important gap between the Builder and Architect tracks. Worth watching.

Copilot Studio
11 AI-103

Develop AI Apps & Agents on Azure

31h 12m · 30 modules

The deep end. Thirty modules covering the full developer surface of Azure AI and Foundry. If you're building custom AI systems — orchestration, retrieval, multi-agent patterns, evaluation — this proves you can.

Azure · Microsoft Foundry
12 Commander · Coming Soon

Copilot Studio Academy: Commander

To be announced

The top tier of the Copilot Studio Academy. Mastery level. Commander is aimed at the people defining patterns, mentoring teams, and pushing the platform to its edges.

Copilot Studio
13 AB-100

Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect

11h 24m · 11 modules

The Expert-level capstone. This credential spans Dynamics 365, Copilot, and Power Platform — built for architects shaping how an entire enterprise adopts agentic AI. It's the most strategic badge in the framework.

D365 · Copilot · Power Platform
04
Leadership

Lead AI transformation

The most overlooked level — and the one that decides whether the technical work above actually creates value. Leaders need their own path. Now they have one.

14 AB-731

AI Transformation Leader

4h 44m · 6 modules

Strategy, change management, organizational design, and ROI — all through the lens of agentic AI adoption. Under five hours, but it's the highest-leverage few hours an executive can spend on this topic. If you sponsor AI work, start here.

AI Builder

Pick a lane, not a stack

The honest answer to "where do I start?" depends on the job you want six months from now. Here are the lanes I'd actually recommend — pick the one that sounds like you, block the time, and stack two credentials in the next ninety days.

Business User01 → 02
Admin / IT03 → 04
Maker05 → 06 → 07 → 08 → 09
Developer03 → 11 (→ 10 when it lands)
Architect11 → 13
Leader01 → 14

If you walk this path, I'd love to hear how it goes — what worked, what didn't, what you'd change. The roadmap is a starting point. Your story is what makes it useful for the next person.
